The program is available at certificate, diploma and masters levels, and entry requires a previous degree in a relevant area of social science.

The program requires study across the Human Geography program and encourages interdisciplinary studies where relevant.

Coursework in Geographical Education

Commencing in 2008 in collaboration with the Australian Centre for Educational Studies, the postgraduate Geographical Education program offers a qualification focused on developing innovative and effective teaching practice at all education levels in teaching geography. The core unit (ACES884 Pedagogies in Geographies) addresses the central concerns of contemporary geographical pedagogy and other units are selected from the Human Geography and Education programs.

Entry to the Geographical Education program requires a relevant first degree and teaching experience.

Coursework in Social Impact Assessment

Commencing in 2008, the Department of Human Geography will offer Australia's first tertiary qualification in the rapidly expanding field of Social Impact Assessment. The program offers a tightly focused program of skills development, research training and relevant theoretical engagement for practitioners in a range of fields requiring an understanding of the methods and implications of SIA, including planning, government, community and industry interests in urban planning, community, infrastructure and resource development, and organisational development. The core of the program is a unit in cross-cultural SIA and one in urban SIA, supplemented by a research project (available at 4, 8 or 12 credit points) in a relevant topic.

Given its relevance to practitioners in remote locations, the program is accessible in distance education made with strong levels of online support. Entry to the SIA program requires a first degree in a relevant area of social or environmental science or relevant work experience at an appropriate level.

The program is available as a     Postgraduate Certificate   |   Postgraduate Diploma

Coursework in Development Studies and Culture Change

In collaboration with the Department of Anthropology, Human Geography offers an innovative and practice-oriented program in Development Studies and Culture Change. The program offers students opportunities to pursue specialist studies on the impacts of development and cultural change in a globalising world. Students in the Development Studies and Culture Change program can specialize in either Anthropology or Human Geography, and/or prioritise specific concentrations within a broad sphere of disciplinary perspectives on development issues: for example, environmental studies, health, human rights and international law, Indigenous studies, international relations, international communications and other relevant areas

The program is available as a     Postgraduate Certificate   |   Postgraduate Diploma  |  Masters
